In recent years, sauna culture has exploded in Ireland. From Clare to Connemara, mobile and seaside saunas are popping up—and they’re proving to be extremely popular. So what’s behind this sauna revolution?
A Pandemic-Driven Shift
The turning point came during the COVID pandemic. With gyms shut, people looked for an alternative and sea swimming grew in popularity. However, the post-dip chill left many looking for warmth and recovery. That’s where the sauna stepped in.
Sauna enthusiasts began setting up wood-fired saunas on Irish beaches. What started as a trend quickly became a movement.
Our Forgotten Sweat House Heritage
While saunas may feel new, Ireland has a long (and largely forgotten) history of sweat-based therapy. Traditional Irish sweat houses—small, dome-shaped stone structures—were once common in rural Ireland. Used to treat illness and promote wellbeing, they relied on fire-heated stones and were often linked to both health and spirituality.
These sweat houses, most active from the 17th to 19th centuries, faded from use in the 1900s. But today’s sauna revival feels like a natural continuation of that tradition.
On May 1st 2025, author and journalist, Rosanna Cooney released Sweat House which delves into the 3000 year old tradition of sauna in Ireland.
More Than Heat
What draws people isn’t just the warmth. It’s the connection—to the land, the sea, and each other. Whether you’re fresh from a freezing dip or just seeking a mindful escape, saunas are offering a space for reflection, conversation, and an opportunity to reconnect with nature.
